|
| The Chevrolet Cobalt is a compact car manufactured by Chevrolet division of the General Motors. Launched in 2004 for the 2005 model year, the Cobalt is based on the GM Delta platform.
The Cobalt is available in two body styles, a 2-door coupe and a 4-door sedan. It is offered in two models: Cobalt Coupe and Cobalt Sedan. The Coupe is available in six trims: LS, 1LT, 2LT, 3LT, SS, and SS Supercharged, and the Sedan is also offered in six trims: LS, 1LT, 2LT, 3LT, LTZ, and SS. All models are available in a five-seater configuration.
For 2007, the Cobalt’s engines were retuned for more power. Other changes for the year included a redesigned console, a redesigned steering wheel, and a new radio head unit, which features an audio input jack. In addition, a new 32-bit computer was introduced for 2007, which replaced the 16-bit unit from 2006.
The Cobalt is covered by a new vehicle limited warranty for three years or 36,000 miles and a powertrain warranty for five years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. It competes with the likes of Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, Honda Civic, and Pontiac Vibe, among others.

|
| All models of the Chevrolet Cobalt, excluding the SS and SS Supercharged, derive power from a 2.2-liter DOHC ECOTEC four-cylinder engine, which produces 148 hp @ 5,600 rpm and 152 lb-ft. of torque @ 4,200 rpm. The SS is powered by a 2.4-liter DOHC ECOTEC high output four-cylinder engine, which delivers 173 hp @ 6,200 rpm and 163 lb-ft. @ 4,800 rpm. The SS Supercharged Coupe gets power from a 2.0-liter DOHC ECOTEC supercharged four-cylinder engine, which churns out 205 hp @ 5,600 rpm and 200 lb-ft. @ 4,400 rpm.
All models except the LTZ Sedan and the SS Supercharged Coupe are linked to a standard 5-speed manual transmission. | Driving Impressions |
|
| Driving the Cobalt is sheer pleasure |
|
| The Chevrolet Cobalt is available in a FWD configuration, which puts the engine weight directly over the driven wheels, thereby improving traction on slippery or snow-packed roads.
The Cobalt offers a choice of 2.2L I-4, 2.4L I-4, and 2.0L Supercharged I-4 engines, which knock out 148 hp, 173 hp, and 205 hp respectively. All the three engines deliver plenty of power and acceleration. However, it is the 2.0L Supercharged engine that scores over the other two in terms of performance.
The Cobalt is driven by a speed-sensitive, electric power steering (EPS), which consists of various electronic sensors and computer controls. These measure and react to the driver’s inputs promptly and adjust the steering assistance to help provide precise control and responsiveness.
All models except the SS and SS Supercharged Coupe ride on a Premium Ride suspension. This independent front strut-type suspension is tuned to adapt to the road conditions. In combination with a hydroformed mounting cradle, the Premium Ride suspension gives a solid, precise feel. It also incorporates hydraulic rear ride bushings to help provide improved ride quality while limiting road noise.
The SS features a Tuned Sport suspension, which uses monotube rear shocks to give you crisp response. It also incorporates hydraulic rear ride bushings to help provide improved ride quality while limiting road noise.
The SS Supercharged Coupe is equipped with a Performance Handling suspension, which features independent front and twist axle rear suspensions, along with front and rear stabilizer bars. It also includes hydraulic rear ride bushings for improved ride quality and coarse road noise suppression. In addition, gas-pressurized monotube rear shocks and dual-rate springs are tuned for the ride and handling characteristics of the SS Supercharged Coupe. These add to vehicle ride and handling with improved damping response during extreme handling maneuvers.
The LS and 1LT features front disc and rear drum brakes. The 2LT, 3LT, and LTZ Sedan are equipped with four-wheel anti-lock, front disc and rear drum brakes, which are optional on LS and 1LT. The SS and SS Supercharged Coupe come with four-wheel anti-lock, four-wheel disc brakes. These sharp brakes bring the Cobalt to a quick, smooth halt when the brake pedal is pressed. The anti-lock braking system (ABS) helps maintain steering control by reducing wheel lockup during hard braking on most slippery surfaces. An all-speed traction control system is standard on LTZ Sedan, and optional on all other models excluding the SS Supercharged Coupe.
The turning diameter of all models, except for the SS Supercharged Coupe, is 37.4 feet. The SS Supercharged Coupe comes with a slightly larger turning diameter of 40.7 feet, which makes it a little difficult to be maneuvered or parked in tight spaces.
