| Driving Impressions |
|
| Excellent driving dynamics deliver a smooth ride |
|
| The Tahoe is powered by either a 4.8L V-8 engine, which delivers 295 horsepower or a 5.3L V-8 engine, which knocks out 320 horsepower. The 5.3L V-8 features active fuel management, which deactivates four of the eight cylinders with seamless precision when extra power is not needed and reactivates the valves to provide eight-cylinder operation when more power is required. The 4-speed automatic transmission shifts seamlessly and smoothly. The Tahoe is steered by a power rack and pinion steering, which offers prompt and precise responses to the driver’s inputs.
The LS and LT models ride on Premium Smooth Ride suspension, which includes a front coil-over-shock design with stabilizer bar and a rear multi-link design with coil springs. The LTZ features Autoride suspension, which automatically varies the amount of shock damping rate on a continual 20-millisecond basis by monitoring road surface, speed, gas and brake pedals, steering angle, and wheel height conditions to maximize handling and comfort. Also, a rear self-leveling feature helps maintain the rear suspension level with the front during heavy trailering or fully loaded conditions.
The LT2 and LT3 may also be equipped with the optional Z71 Off-Road suspension, which is designed for both on-road and off-road driving. This rugged suspension includes specially tuned 46 mm gas-charged shock absorbers and off-road rubber jounce bumpers that work in conjunction to help minimize large suspension inputs. When rear-wheel slippage is detected at lower speeds, the locking differential mechanism locks the rear axle, sending maximum drive power to both rear wheels.
The Tahoe comes equipped with four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, which offer greater stopping ability, enhanced pedal feel, and reduced noise. The LTZ comes standard with an automatic locking rear differential, which is optional on other models. The automatic locking rear differential evenly distributes power to both rear wheels in less-than-ideal traction conditions and helps maintain traction and stability of the vehicle.
All models are also equipped with StabiliTrak, an electronic stability control system that has a proactive roll avoidance system, which improves vehicle stability, particularly during emergency maneuvers. With a high ground clearance of 10.5 inches, the Tahoe can be driven on rugged terrains with great ease.
The Tahoe is in its element on the freeway and cruises along smoothly. Courtesy of its sound insulation measures, the cabin is reasonably quiet.
